VIOSO had the privilege to support Turnstone and Wizwave in their project for the Korean Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) to create a immersive 3D visualization theatre. The integrator used 13 Barco UDM 4k15 projectors running dual inputs to project onto a cylindrical and floor surface, measuring 9m in diameter, 3.5m in height and rounded corners.

Thanks to our full dome calibration kit with a fisheye lens, we were able to achieve perfect geometry despite the challenges of positioning, quintruple overlap, chromatic aberration, and glossy surfaces. The camera had a resolution of 3072x3072px and covered the entire surface. The calibration was then successfully applied in Dataton WATCHOUT, MiddleVR and WorldViz VR.

The ENSAN setup consist of a 360° projection in cone shaped screen with 6 UHD projectors. With only one Fulldome Camera Calibration Kit we were able to calibrate and provide to MiddleVR software our warp & blend files in order to playback some custom Unity3D applications using tracking. The VIOSO technology provides a fully automated calibration and a flawless playback of the content in a really immersive panoramic projection.

This room is used by the school for visualization, research and presentations by the students and the local companies. They can easily run Unity3D, Unreal and any type of software thanks to VIOSO Anyblend VR&SIM hooking on the desktop.

This year, we are participating in the Ideenzug project by Deutsche Bahn taking part in the content management and interactivity inside the train again. DB presents the train of the future, including the latest smart display technologies, moving seats, interactive cameras and connectivity innovations. The setup was equipped with a large network of 22 servers, approximately 40 displays, and controlled by VIOSO Player and Wings VIOSO making the Ideenzug presentation autonomous and lively dynamic!

Multiprojection for simulator and VR projects is always a complex task. Using our technology these tasks were successfully realized for the driving simulator at Rehaklinik Bellikon. Using a single-camera approach, 5 Canon UK projectors were automatically blended and aligned on the panoramic cylinder screen from AV Stumpfl. The professional driving simulation software by Silab from WIVW  has a built-in plugin for integration of calibration data directly into the render engine. This collaboration allows us to use the dedicated calibration software VIOSO Anyblend VR&SIM to perform not only automatic camera-based blending and alignment, but also auto perspective (frustum) correction for each projector.

The driving simulator in Bellikon combines all advantages of the high quality technologies that are involved in this setup. 

Currently, the simulator is in active use. Its main purpose is to perform a realistic survey of driving behavior for brain-injured patients with different traffic scenarios like highway, freeway or city traffic. The resulting diagnosis together with neurological and neuropsychological results help to define the driver’s fitness assessment. Furthermore, the simulator is used for driving trainings with a therapeutic aim.

At the full-motion cockpit facility operated by Flugsimulator.com GmbH in Hamburg, the operator commissioned MOC Simulation Services GmbH to manufacture and install a genuine Airbus A320- cockpit (originally part of an A320 airframe) on a high-performance motion platform, paired with a multi-projector display system to deliver highly immersive external visuals.

The visual system required precise geometric alignment across 3 projectors that together form a seamless wrap-around view. The goal was to achieve flight-level realism inside a confined cockpit shell—matching the visual fidelity and positional accuracy expected from professional simulation environments. 

To accomplish this, the MOC Simulation Services used ProjectionTools by domeprojection.com, an advanced camera-based auto-calibration software suite designed for curved-screen, dome, and motion-platform applications.

Technical overview of the display system

The Hamburg simulator features a full Airbus A320 cockpit shell mounted on a 6-DOF motion platform with a curved projection screen providing a wide-angle field of view around the cockpit windows. Panasonic projectors are used to create a continuous out-the-window scene.

Key system characteristics include:

• Curved projection surface providing 180°+ horizontal field of view.
• Multi-channel display with overlapping projectors.
• Full-motion integration, where the platform’s movement must remain visually stable relative to the pilot’s viewpoint.
• Confined geometry, requiring precise projection through cockpit windows without overspill or misalignment.
• Operational maintenance and recalibration: given full-motion use, service intervals, or repositioning, recalibration may be required.

Calibrating the simulator:

The Projectors were installed and mechanically aligned to cover the surface surrounding the cockpit windows and a high-resolution calibration camera was rigidly mounted with an unobstructed view of the entire projection area.

The motion platform was set to a neutral position to serve as a geometric reference during calibration.

Next was Geometric mapping and projector alignment, and using ProjectionTools’ Camera Alignment module, each projector’s field of view was scanned using structured light patterns. The software automatically analyzed camera images to build a detailed 3D geometry model of the projection surface, compensating for curvature and projector placement offsets. The resulting data produced precise warp meshes for each channel, ensuring that all projected pixels aligned perfectly with the screen geometry. The Blend and Color module was used to calculate pixel-level blending masks in the overlap zones, creating smooth transitions between projectors

Finally The calibration results were exported directly into the simulator’s Image Generator (IG) and display control software, using ProjectionTools’ plugin interface. The warp and blend data were applied at the GPU level, ensuring real-time correction without visible latency.

Because the A320 cockpit operates on a Kinnetek 4.2to - 6 DOF motion platform, ProjectionTools’ Coordinate System Manager was configured so that all projection data remained stable relative to the pilot’s eye point, even as the simulator pitched, rolled, or yawed.

ProjectionTools calibration software from domeprojection, a brand of VIOSO, is relied on by some of the world's most advanced simulators and plays a key role in this state-of-the-art maritime simulator.

Manoeuvre simulators are the most demanding in terms of visualisation, where achieving both accuracy and realism presents significant challenges. Projection onto a panoramic screen surrounding the bridge is the solution that best meets these requirements. The screen, consisting of a PVC canvas stretched over an aluminium structure, measures 16 metres in diameter and is 6 metres high.

The image is projected by five carefully calibrated 4K laser projectors to achieve uniform and consistent projection across the entire screen. A short-throw projector completes this installation by providing the rear view of the wheelhouse.

Finally, four screens were positioned on each side of the gangway wings to optimise the simulation of docking and undocking manoeuvres.

After a recent service of the projection hardware, it was necessary to recalibrate the whole setup to ensure that this flagship simulator operated at peak performance. When not a single pixel can be out of place, camera-based calibration is the only option. The operators turned to specialised system integrator project:syntropy, to undertake this task.

Commenting on the calibration, Malin Hallbeck, Key Account Manager at project:syntropy, said, “This is a very unique configuration that was fascinating to work on. We chose ProjectionTools as we knew we could rely on it to give pixel-perfect calibration of each projection channel. Together with Wärtsilä, we have successfully implemented many ships bridge visual systems. Wärtsilä Simulation and Training is a global leader in advanced maritime training solutions, helping to equip the next generation of seafarers with the skills to operate safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

Continuing, she notes “in some camera positions, the calibration camera had to be mounted high above the projected surface and bridge house to capture the full projection and, to also, crucially, be able to 3D measure the markers on these surfaces.”

The preparation of the camera positions was undertaken at the Magdeburg office of domeprojection. Christian Steinmann, VIOSO and domeprojection CTO, said: “By analysing each camera position, we can absolutely ensure the highest precision possible.”

He continues “We have a long history of successful projects with project:syntropy, and we are happy to have played a role in enabling a state-of-the-art maritime manoeuvring simulator, which is the largest and most immersive in France. It truly is an impressive simulator, with 120 maritime pilots (representing half of all French pilots) sharing the same tool and 18 fully modelled ports”.

The ProjectionTools software allows for multiple eyepoint profiles to be created and stored, ensuring the simulator can be used in multiple scenarios without any additional reconfiguration. In total, three eyepoint profiles were provided: Centre point – Port Side point and Starboard point.

Wärtsilä NTPRO (Navi-Trainer Professional) is an advanced maritime simulation solution designed to provide highly realistic, standards-compliant training for navigation, ship handling, and operational safety. Powered by the Wärtsilä real-time simulation engine, it integrates a dedicated domeprojection plugin to apply the necessary correction data, ensuring precise visual alignment and immersive training experiences

This advanced ship-handling simulator is used to train maritime pilots from 18 French stations and to model new port developments, which are then tested by these same pilots in an immersive simulation environment.

The provisions relating to professional training activities are certified by the QUALIOPI standard, which guarantees the quality of services.
